Every industry has its own language and terms. These words and phrases can be confusing to anyone who is not part of a specific industry’s daily operations, and the waste management business is no exception.

CND: Construction and demolition 

Dumpster: A large metal or plastic bin used for refuse. It’s designed to be hoisted onto a specially equipped truck for emptying or hauling away. 

Recyclable: To treat or process used or waste materials to make them suitable for reuse. 

Demolition: Relating to tearing down a building or demolishing something.

Inert materials: These are green materials such as wood, leaves, or soil.

Container: Anything that can contain something, including a carton, box, crate, or can.

Landfill: A lowland area that gets built up from deposits of solid refuse in layers covered by soil. 

Ton: A unit of weight, equivalent to 2000 pounds (0.907 metric ton) avoirdupois (short ton, or net ton ) in the U.S., while In Great Britain, it weighs 2240 pounds (1.016 metric tons), avoirdupois (long ton ). 

Concrete: Artificial, stone-like material used for various structural purposes. It’s made by mixing cement and various aggregates, like sand, pebbles, gravel, or shale, with water and allowing the mixture to harden.

Asbestos: A fibrous mineral, either made from Amphibole or Chrysotile. It was previously used for making incombustible or fireproof articles. 

Freon: A brand name for any class of liquid or gaseous fluorocarbon or chlorofluorocarbon products, which are used chiefly as refrigerants. 

Clean concrete: A container is considered clean when it’s filled with dirt, asphalt, rebar, and concrete, but not garbage. 

Roll-off: A term used to describe the truck that carried a dumpster container or describes the container itself.

Tonnage: The weight of the material placed into the container.
